We believe that it was some kind of natural instinct that led our great-grandfather Franz Wentner to this special place in 1954, where our Hotel Saltus stands today. At that time, there was hardly anything but untouched nature in this secluded area – and a small mountain village into which not even a road led. The road came ten years later in 1964. The only connection to Bolzano/Bozen was via cable car, which Franz and his wife had used at the time. Who knows, maybe he had counted the peaks of the Dolomite range to fight his vertigo. But what we do know is that something magical had happened to our great-grandfather when he found himself surrounded by this majestic natural landscape. It was something so significant that he had spontaneously decided to build a hotel: The Sonnenparadies – San Genesio/Jenesien’s first hotel.
From the Sonnenparadies
to the Saltus Forest Retreat
Franz was convinced that a riviera-like climate existed here at 1,100 metres, which could help relieve those who have asthma. It was not until many years later that the health-promoting effect of the air at this altitude was proven in the AMAS 2000 altitude study. So, what happened to the Sonnenparadies? Well, it is undoubtedly still a sunny paradise as its name in German implies, even if the Sonnenparadies no longer exists. The descendants of my great-grandfather have opened two new hotels: Hotel König Laurin and Gasthof Tschögglbergerhof, both of which still exist today. Then it was our turn – the fourth generation – to open the Hotel Saltus. And that’s the history of our hotel in San Genesio/Jenesien.

Now it’s your turn – next to your bed, you will find a small booklet. Open it and get inspired by the allure of the blank pages, and most importantly, by what you have experienced with us – day in, day out. It can be a beautiful thought, a dream, a word of appreciation. When we write down the good things, we make them a part of us. You will be amazed at how this can change your perspective on the world.
